Final Blog for International Business... :( (Hot to network)

http://www.thestar.com/business/smallbusiness/people/article/1306596--how-to-6-key-strategies-for-networking

This is it folks...We are wrapping up our blogs and preparing for the exams that are tedious and evil.... I mean fun and exciting :D!

For the final blog I have decided to do mine on an article on how to succeed when it comes to networking. It is scientifically proven that 20% of people are naturally born with a shy nature, this has been proven in 2010 by American and Chinese research. In order to succeed in business, you must be assertive and not shy towards other people or you are likely to not succeed. In order to network one must be able to follow these six steps; Do your homework, make an impression, have strategies when it comes to socializing, be natural, put others first and be card smart.

Do your homework:
Always research the task you are assigned in order to have a better understanding for the task you are assigned. There are many sites that can help you, forums and search engines are great sources to help you do research.

Make an expression:
Stand out from the crowd, don't just blend in be the one that wears something flashy such as a bright color or wear something unexpected but remember to follow the dress code. Keep eye contact with the person you are talking to, always smile and most importantly smile.

Socializing Strategies:
Approach the people who are alone as opposed to groups, they are more likely to prefer one on one conversations as opposed to group discussions. Have key points you can discuss with people and bring a cup of coffee or some kind of food for you to share with others.

Be natural:
Talk to the people naturally, do not treat them as clients as people prefer to be more comfortable with someone they know. Build a relationship by talking about general topics like the whether or the news then ask if they would be interested in your business.

Put others ahead of yourself:
By helping others you are giving them a reason to be interested in what you do, they will be more likely to repay you for helping them out than just talking to them about your business. Karma- What comes around goes around.

Be card smart:
Don't just give out cards, exchange information with people the people you think have potential and can help your business. Remember to organize the cards you receive and have a place where you can put the cards in.

Do you have any other advice in order to succeed in business? Post and comment in the section below about your favorite parts from business class!

  2. I would say that these are some excellent tips for us students esp. in the future once we start hunting for jobs. I would say that the first impression and how we market ourselves are extremely important in the field of business and also in modern society. People might not always accept that they judge others but we are constantly being judged by everyone around us and therefore it is really important to always watch what we say and how we deal with others.

Also, I would say that all the above-mentioned tips are really helpful but one tip that was not mentioned there but I believe is extremely important is Perseverance. In the real world, you might not always get the best results on the first try even if you are amazing, so therefore we must not get disheartened about our failures and must keep on trying till we reach our goal rather than giving up. As I see it, failures are only stepping stones to our success :)

  3. Ooooooooo, nice change of pace with this entry! As Dpac suggests, yes this is important for getting jobs and thus networking begins much before that time. I would say that one should begin the networking Day 1 of College or University. This is where it begins.

It is very understandable that many people's natural tendency is to be somewhat introverted/less social. That being said, students "come out of their shell" at different times - some early in high school, some in post-secondary, while some as adults. That being said, sometimes it is okay to do things out of your comfort zone and trying some simple things pointed out in this article such as "wearing something a little different" (eg. could even be as simple as a cool or colourful accessory). You don't need to be friends with everyone, but be friendly. Maintain contacts and grow your network of young (and old) adults. Attend "events" and socialize with others beyond your close, "safe" group of friends -> they will always be there.

    Great post idea Adiel!

  5. Hey Adiel what a unique post, it was fun reading. I agree 100% that we need to network world wide and have a general knowledge about things that happen around us, and honestly after this blog assignment it has forced me to actually read the newspaper once in awhile. When it comes to socialization personally I say I am shy to a certain extent. I would do something crazy if I got people to support me. But I know that sometimes you have to stand alone. As you all know I don't love presentations but hey we have to do them throughout our lives. And as Sir said being shy is not that great, we have to grow beyond our comfort level and see the open world of diverse culture and the unique individuals which surround us. Great tips to follow and great life lessons especially for youngsters like us who are entering the job world. Sometimes we just need a reminder of what is really important. Awesome post :)
